Top Things to do in Kingscote

Kingscote is one of Kangaroo Island’s must-see destinations.

Located on the northeast corner of Kangaroo Island sits the town of Kingscote. This charming town is the largest on the island and is often a starting point when beginning a Kangaroo Island adventure.

Whether you’re in Kingscote for a few hours or a few days, here are some of the top things to do!

Kingscote Jetty

The Kingscote Jetty is a popular spot for avid fishers to try their luck from their boats or the jetty pier. You can visit the Kingscote Jetty and watch the locals or try fishing on your own. This is also a great spot to catch the sunset, as the sky illuminates above the tranquil waters

Bay of Shoals Wines

Bay of Shoals Wines was established in 1993 on one of the first European settlements in South Australia. Here you’ll find locally grown and harvested wines. The estate is made up of over 15 hectares of vines along the scenic coastline. This winery offers cellar door tastings, hamper lunches and incredible views!

Island Beehive

Island Beehive is your go-to spot for all things centred around honey! The business has been operating since the 1940s and became certified as an organic establishment in 2001. The store sources its honey from the best hives across the island. When visiting, you will find honey, flavoured liquors, body cream and more.

Hope Cottage Museum

If you’re looking to learn a bit of history about Kangaroo Island, visit Hope Cottage in Kingscote.

Hope Cottage was built in 1859 as a home for the first settlers on the island. Today, the cottage is decorated to reflect life in the 1860s. You will see old farm machinery, communication equipment and more. There are also plaques with fascinating bits of information explaining the history of Kangaroo Island.

Seal Bay Conservation Park

The Seal Bay Conservation Park is the perfect day trip from Kingscote. It takes about 45 minutes to get here, but the drive is well worth it. Aside from the gorgeous island scenery, you’ll get to see the largest Australian sea lion colony on Kangaroo Island!

Spend time at this conservation park and watch the sea lions as they bask in the sun, frolic across the sand and play in the water. Time flies by while watching these adorable critters at play. There is also an informative visitor centre where you can learn more about seals and their lives on Kangaroo Island.

Emu Bay

Emu Bay isn’t located in Kingscote, but this fun location is just a short drive west. Once you arrive in the town of Emu Bay, you’ll find a 4 kilometre long beach lined with tranquil, turquoise waters. This is a great place to spend the day at the beach!

Take a refreshing dip in the calm waters of the beach and then relax on the pristine sands. Or try stand up paddle boarding or snorkelling. When you’re not enjoying the water, take a stroll to view the stacked rocks covered in orange, ancient lichen.
