Kangaroo Island is perfect for nature lovers and adventurers.

Off the coast of South Australia is Kangaroo Island, a gorgeous island filled with wildlife, rock formations, and beautiful beaches. Kangaroo Island most certainly does have sand surfing, also known as sandboarding! You can enjoy the thrill of sliding down and across sand dunes while standing on a toboggan or sandboard.

Where is the best place to sand surf on Kangaroo Island?

Sand boarding

Without a doubt, the best place to go sand surfing on the island is Little Sahara in Vivonne Bay!

Little Sahara has naturally occurred sand dunes which are usually closer to the coast. The sand dunes here can vary in size, with some being as tall as 70 metres high!

On the site, you can hire a sandboard or a toboggan, with a sandboard being easier for the first timers! You can also try out fat biking and buggies too.

Other things to do on Kangaroo Island

Kangaroo Island is full of adventure with so much to do and see.

Vivonne Bay Beach
Not too far from sand surfing in Little Sahara is one of the most beautiful beaches in Australia, Vivonne Bay. We promise you’ll want to visit this white sand beach with glistening crystal-clear water. You of course can swim, go surfing, or simply relax here.

Flinders Chase National Park

Flinders Chase National Park

For some more adventure, Flinders Chase National Park is a great place to visit on Kangaroo Island. Popular attractions in the national park are Remarkable Rocks which are natural rock formations that are best viewed at sunset. Or there is Admirals Arch where you can have a chance to see fur seals!

To see other wildlife like a platypus, you’ll need some time and patience to possibly spot one in the lake on the Platypus Waterholes Walk. There are viewing platforms throughout the walk with the best chance to see them at dusk and dawn.

Seal Bay
Not too far from your sand surfing adventures is Seal Bay, where you can walk along with the Australian sea lions on Seal Bay Beach. For a fee, you can go along the boardwalk or on the beach with the sea lions. There is also a guided tour available.

There are tours available of Kangaroo Island or you can drive and catch a ferry from Cape Jervis to Penneshaw. There are plenty of ferry departures and we recommend booking early.
