Kangaroo Island is home to hundreds of thousands of long-nosed fur seals.
How many seals are on Kangaroo Island? On Kangaroo Island, there are about 100,000 seals that live on the island. These cute little creatures are very rare to see anywhere else in the world!
The seals here have called this place home for thousands of years, so you might be lucky enough to experience their habitat. Taking a trip to Kangaroo Island allows you to see them in their habitat!
If you do the tour to see the seals, you’ll meet about a 5-minute walk away from the beach on Seal Bay, where you will then take a wander on to the beach to see the cute seals resting on the sand!
Seals are curious creatures
Don’t be afraid if a curious Australian sea lion pup flumps over to you during breeding season. If they do, they are being curious. They have a long breeding cycle which lasts about 1.5 years, and you might just be visiting them after they have had babies.
Seals have a puppy dog-like nature and they are very inquisitive animals.
If you go during the breeding season, then this is more likely to happen – they are trying to figure you out.
Seal Bay
Seal Bay on Kangaroo Island is one of the only places in Australia where you can see the native sea lions. Seal Bay Beach is one of the only places in the world that you can view sea lions in their natural habitat. The viewing platform looks out onto the beach, where the mother seals rear their seal pups.
Seal Bay is called Seal Bay for a reason. On a good day, you’ll see loads of these fluffy creatures relaxing around on the sand. Watch these cute creatures as they chill out on the beach! They live both in water, and on land too.
The Seal Bay Conservation Park is a recognised organisation which offers tours around Seal Bay.
Flinders Chase National Park and Admirals Arch
Or, check out some of the different viewpoints down at the Southwest point of the island. There is a seal bay lookout, as well as a visit to Flinders Chase National Park and Admirals Arch where you’ll be able to see seals.
On Kangaroo Island, there are three different species of seal. Looking at their noses will give you a sign of which seal species they are. The most common species is the long-nosed seal.
Other wildlife
Asides from the huge amount of seals that you can see on Kangaroo Island, you can also see plenty of other wildlife. There are lots of kangaroos, echidnas and a few native snakes living on the island. You will likely encounter kangaroos whilst you wander around the island! Of course – it’s called Kangaroo Island for a reason!
Taking a tour
Whether you want to do a tour, climb up the mountains, or you want to photograph the seals… Kangaroo Island gives you plenty of chances to see some fascinating Australian wildlife and scenery.
