Almost a zoo without fences, Kangaroo Island is the perfect place to spot some of Australia’s native wildlife.

Kangaroo Island never disappoints with its wildlife. Visitors come to the island to spot kangaroos, koalas, echidnas and other native wildlife. Located in South Australia, Kangaroo Island is the third largest island in Australia.

No doubt one of the best parts of Kangaroo Island is the Australian native wildlife you can spot. This is one of the best locations in Australia to check out these animals in the wild. Aside from the wildlife, the island offers soft sand beaches and incredible landscapes.

Wildlife

You can spot all kinds of wildlife on the island. On land, the most popular are kangaroos, wallabies and koalas. In the water you’ll find dolphins and sea lions. If you want to see a particular animal, we recommend going on a tour. Local guides usually know the best places to spot the wildlife. You can go to the Wildlife Park to cuddle a koala. Or you could handfeed kangaroos and wallabies and see even more wildlife.

Food and drinks

Kangaroo Island has a great selection of wineries, breweries and restaurants. There are great places to try the best food and drinks on the island. Be sure to visit Kingscote if you’re a foodie as it is one of the more popular areas to go for the food. There are also great desserts on the island. You will have plenty to pick from. You can even enjoy it on the beach while watching the sunset.

Water activities

As expected, you can of course swim, surf, sail and dive in the crystal-clear waters of Kangaroo Island. The best places to go are Emu Bay and Stokes Bay. They are the safest beaches on the island with warmer waters. There are great fishing spots all around the island. Some of the best areas are Kingscote Jetty, Nepean Bay, Penneshaw and Vivonne Bay. There is a huge variety of fish to catch on the island. Fishing is allowed all year with some places allowing boat hire. Or you can try kayak fishing!

4WD-ing

There are many off road tours available on Kangaroo Island, perfect for those who prefer more of an adventure. These tours give more of an outback experience of the island by 4WD. You can still see the wildlife, go on bushwalks and drive by the coastline on the beach. You are even able to ride a quad bike on the beaches and explore the island in a different way.
